Top Cancer Causing Foods
Top cancer-causing foods are hiding on our store shelves today, in more places than we want to believe. Cancer seems to be the most feared word in our society so maybe we can knock cancer out of its place by not eating the foods that have the below ingredients in them.
Although my husband’s throat cancer was probably a result of smoking, we still are aware of any new news of things that cause cancer. So when he saw a list of top cancer-causing foods to avoid in a doctor’s office window, he took a photo and I have them listed below.
The bags of many brands are lined with Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is listed with the EPA as a carcinogen. According to a study at UCLA. In animal testing, it caused liver cancer, testicular cancer, and pancreatic cancer. It’s also known to cause health problems.
Some brands of Microwave popcorn that claim to use untreated bags are not using organic corn so you know they will contain pesticides. Plus the oils, (corn and soybean oil), are GMO products which link to a lot of rising health problems in this country.
Your best bet for healthy popcorn is to buy Non-GMO Organic Popcorn. Use an air popper if you like it without butter.
and pop it the old-fashioned way. Put a few teaspoons of Nutiva Red Palm Oil on Coconut Oil in a pan with 1/4 cup kernels popcorn and heat on high until popping slows. (The red palm oil is different than the palm kernel oil. It is farmed sustainably in Ecuador)
Yes, eating healthy will cost more. I don’t like it, but it is better to pay a few bucks extra now, than thousands when we are older and need our money for retirement instead of health care. We don’t know what state our health care system in the United States will be in till then, so we are better off taking excellent care of our health while we are young and it’s never too late to start better food habits. If this all seems overwhelming you might benefit from a program called Emeals. Emeals will plan your meals for you, give you the recipes and grocery list, and you can choose from categories like quick and healthy, gluten-free, low calorie, and dairy free. All for $5 dollars a month!
Non Organic Fruits
Again, it’s more expensive. We have to pay the farmers or the doctors. Doctors are always more (I think)! Anyway, try throwing fruit in the freezer before it spoils. If you freeze it at it’s freshest, you lock in all the health benefits. You probably save money considering how much you end up throwing away trying to eat it fresh. Frozen fruit is excellent in smoothies and a super quick healthy breakfast (as long as it’s organic).
Canned tomatoes often have cans lined with BPA ( Bisphenol A) is linked to hormone disruption, heart conditions, and diabetes. Trader Joe’s and Eden Foods use BPA free cans. Other companies are making changes too so check the labels before you buy. Usually, companies will note on the label if the cans are BPA free.
Check hospital websites for research statistics and findings. John Hopkins University researched BPA’s in canned foods.
I think many research hospitals are open and honest to the findings of chemicals and preservatives in food products although many doctors will not take the time to talk about this subject. If your doctor isn’t open to talking about the importance of eating organic foods you can check for research online, but be sure to check who’s doing the research.
Sodium Nitrate is used as a preservative in processed meats and it produces N-nitroso, a known carcinogen.
Processed meats are lunch meats, sausages, hot dogs, and bacon. You may be able to find healthier versions but check the packaging for sodium nitrates.
The problem with our conventionally raised meats is that most animals get genetically modified foods treated with pesticides. Many of the vitamins found in meat are doubled or tripled in plant-based foods so you may be better off eating a plant-based diet or limiting your consumption of meats. Beans have lots of protein and fiber and are filling as well.
Even our fish earned a place on the top cancer-causing food list. Farmed Salmon have high levels of PCB, mercury, dioxins, pesticides, and antibiotics. Buy canned or labeled Wild Sockey Salmon. I’ll never forget the time I unknowingly bought farmed Salmon. They tasted so bad that I couldn’t finish the bag I purchased. The taste of Wild Salmon is worth every penny.
Hydrogenated oils are vegetable oils whose chemical structure has been altered to prevent rancidness in foods. They increase cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, LDL, and decrease good cholesterol. , or HDL.
They block the chemicals that combat inflammation that benefit the hormonal and nervous systems. Baked goods, some kinds of margarine, deep-fried foods and snack foods often contained hydrogenated fats. Many doctors believe even small amounts of hydrogenated oils are dangerous for the human body.
Potato chips are high in fat and calories, trans fats, and they have high sodium levels. Acrylamide is a substance that is in starchy foods (potatoes) that are fried, roasted, or cooked at high temperatures. It is also found in cigarette smoke. The American Cancer Society suggests limiting your intake of potato chips and french fries.
Highly Salted, Pickled, and Smoked Foods
These are foods that contain a high amount of Nitrates to preserve the food. However, these are not the foods you pickle at home.
White flour bleached with chlorine gas. That speaks for itself let alone the fact that all nutritional value is removed in the process of refining the flour and long-term consumption can also lead to insulin resistance. It’s a shame that many households eat products containing white flour on a regular basis instead of enjoying the nutritional benefits of a diet without white flour.
The FDA and USDA have been under attack for their ongoing approval of genetically modified foods (GMOs). Jeffery Smith, a leading expert on GMO foods, explains what has been changed in GMO foods by dividing them into two primary traits, herbicide ready and pesticide tolerance.
Herbicide Tolerance- These foods are also called roundup ready and are soy, corn, cotton, sugar beets, and alfalfa. These foods are changed to be resistant to the chemical Roundup so when it is used in fields to kill weeds; it will not kill the plant. Therefore the foods have been chemically treated while they are growing and the idea is that the chemical remains in the food.
Pesticide Intolerance- Corn and cotton have been injected with a gene in a bacteria in soil that is a known insecticide causing insects to die if they bite it.
According to Dr. Joseph Mercola:
“High Fructose Sugar also tricks the body into gaining weight by fooling your metabolism (it turns off the appetite-control system). Fructose does not appropriately stimulate insulin, which in turn does not suppress ghrelin (the “hunger hormone”) and doesn’t stimulate leptin (the “satiety hormone”), which together result in your eating more and developing insulin resistance.” This process also suppresses the immune system.
White sugar is highly addictive as many of us already know, but as Dr. Mercola suggests, it doesn’t suppress the hunger hormone. To me, that is the same as leaving you wanting more. If you are trying to lose weight or eat healthily, you can see where this can get you into trouble.
Many people say that when you give up sugar, you don’t crave it so I tried it and it’s right for me! It only takes one bite of something sweet to start you back on the roller coaster of wanting more sugar. So, if you can fight off the initial urge to eat something sweet you don’t feel like your missing out. Therefore you choose foods that suppress the hunger hormone and end up more satisfied in the end. A much better roller coaster ride!
Try coconut sugar for a brown sugar taste in things like oatmeal, smoothies, and recipes. I was surprised how sweet this was, and it’s Non-GMO.
Excessive Alcohol Use
Excessive alcohol use is the second leading cancer cause (behind cigarettes) in America. Its use causes mouth, esophagus, liver, rectum, colon, and female breast cancer.
Overeating red meat significantly increases your risk of developing colon cancer
Soda and Diet Soda
Laurence N. Kolonel, MD, Ph.D., a researcher at the Cancer Research Center and professor of public health at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu speaks of a study he evaluated. With his colleagues, he assessed the association between added sugars in the diet and pancreatic cancer risk, publishing the findings in 2007. “In our study, we found a positive association between high intake of fructose and pancreatic cancer,” he tells WebMD. “Since high-fructose corn syrup is the main sweetener in non-diet soft drinks, our findings and those of the present study are quite consistent.”
As I find more and more studies aren’t publicly broadcasted I realize that just because the FDA still approves certain foods their approval is not an indicator of a food’s safety. All it in fact indicates is that the FDA approved the food for sale, not for safe longterm consumption. We can’t walk around the outer walls of a grocery store and assume the food is safe to consume because sometimes it is littered with more unsafe than safe choices. We are the only ones that can make a choice to choose the best foods for ourselves and our family.
